| ENERGETIC KRAVITZ PROVES ROCK 'N' ROLL'S ON A ROLL The following is taken out of The Seattle Times review of the Lenny Tour:Kravitz's voice was a little weak to begin with, perhaps made up for in sheer volume. This could also have been because he played after opening act Pink, who nearly stole the show. Sagging her baggy white pants to show some midriff, Pink bounced on stage with "Get The Party Started." Heard live, Pink's voice is full of character and emotion, soaring like gospel. The genuinely talented 22-year-old belted out her radio hits along with tributes to her idols, Linda Perry of 4 Non Blonds and Janis Joplin. | P!NK: PARTY STARTED, PILL SWALLOWED, ELEPHANT SPARED A report from the road regarding opening acts, motocross riding, and workout music.by Rachel Perry After lobbing ridiculously catchy songs onto the charts for the last 10 months, Pink has become one of 2002's most captivating pop heroes. She's got range: the distance between "Get This Party Started" and "Just Like a Pill" proves that she's adept at both dance anthems and confessional diatribes, and onstage she puts enough energy into both to be deemed a one-woman storm. Now she's on the road with Lenny Kravitz - a gig she got by willing it into existence after cold-calling Lenny himself. On stage it's a crazed animation that reminds us Pink led a punk rock band when she was 13, but her knowledge of rock history goes farther than that: a portion of the show is also given over to the music of Janis Joplin. Wild-assed fashions, a wiseacre attitude regarding pop protocol, and a heart so big you can hear it beating in every song? Sounds like lady Pink will be around for awhile. VH1 caught up with her on the road in New England, and she explained the ways in which Joplin inspires her, how women need to command more respect for themselves, and when an elephant should be given a damned break. VH1: You were headlining your own tour, and now you're opening for Lenny. What's the difference? Pink: There are not as many people [in the audience] that dress up like me. It's very easy to perform in front of screaming young girls. But when you kind of have to win people over, it's a little more work. But it's fun; it's challenging. VH1: This is a Lenny show - of course there are screaming young girls here. Pink: Yeah, but they're screaming for Lenny. ... I don't have the naked chest with the six-pack and the Afro, so… VH1: You should dress up like Lenny one night and see what happens. Pink: Uh, I don't know. VH1: How are they responding to you? Pink: Awesome, better than I thought. ... Once I jump out with the Janis Joplin, I got 'em all. VH1: I love Janis. I was kind of a weird kid, and I was listening to Janis when I was like 10 years old. Pink: Yeah, me too VH1: Why do you like her so much? Pink: I always loved her voice, and her music, but I saw interviews of her when I was really young, and she's just such an amazing women, the things she says. VH1: Like what? Pink: She could tell anyone off at any time - and say it nicely. I haven't learned the nicely part. She was so smart and so free-spirited. She was a fighter, she was a woman who did blues music when no one else thought it was possible, and she broke barriers, and she was a tortured, tormented soul, and I guess I could relate to her a little bit. VH1: You just seem like such a strong, independent, kind of out-for-the-girls kind of girl. Did you ever think that maybe you would inspire other women like that? Pink: I always got in trouble for this attitude when I was younger, but now it kind of works for me. And I have letters that are so just heart-wrenching, tear-jerking, [from] girls who can only get out of bed in the morning if they hear a certain song, or got back together with their parents because they saw "Diary" where I said all parents are human. It's just, you know, different things I say and do. The impact you have on people is amazing. VH1: Like your song "Respect" - how did you get to that point where you figured that out? Pink: I started early with everything in my life. Being out in the streets, and being with a lot of different kind of people - you just learn the hard way. And I've always been a tomboy, so I had the privilege of growing up with guys and not having to be their girlfriend, so they didn't have anything to hide from me. So I got to know the real deal and what they talk about, and how they look at women and blah blah blah. I learned the mentality. I don't agree with a lot of it, but I think a lot of women - you know the way we portray ourselves, we only get as much respect as we command. VH1: We just want to be loved, but why do we need this validation from men? Pink: I have no idea. But I guess when you're a strong person, you don't sell yourself short, and you demand that respect, they're gonna give it to you, 'cause you know they follow us. They do whatever we let them. [Laughs.] VH1: There is a muscle group named after you. Me and my friend John, when we go to the gym and work out the oblique muscle, we call it the Pinks, because you have the best obliques in the world. Pink: Even I was really fat, they'd probably still be there; it'd just be an overlap kind of thing. I think it's just hereditary, in the muscle. VH1: Do you work out on the road? Pink: I get in the habit, then I get out of it. I'll work out for like two weeks straight and I'll be hard-core every morning on the treadmill. VH1: What do you do? Pink: I hate weights, I hate the gym, so I just do whatever I can read to. I just walk on the treadmill, stair climber whatever. But then I'll get out of the habit. I'll just be so lazy. Don't wake me up, I can't do it. VH1: You're in a Bally's commercial. So I guess they have some Pink workout. Have you done it? Pink: No, I don't think I could, cause it's made off the little dance I do in "Get the Party Started," and for me it was an eight-bar dance, and then you stop in between takes, and do it over. And this one is a straight hour. I'd die. I'd keel over. VH1: [Motocross rider] Carey Hart - your man. Have you ever driven a motorcycle through his window? A motocross bike? Pink: Thought about it, but no I haven't. Not yet. ... He's teaching me how to drive a motorbike. VH1: You didn't know how? Pink: Street bikes, not dirt bikes. I guess it's the same kind of thing, but dirt makes me nervous. So I'm learning. VH1: "Just Like a Pill" [in which Hart appears] is kind of a different video for you. Dark. Pink: All my videos have been very cartoony. This one's very dark and artsy, and I have black hair, which is very fun. I loved it. VH1: What side of you is this? Is this the inner Pink, or is this just another - Pink: Just another part [that I] haven't concentrated on before. VH1: There's an elephant in it. Pink: Nelly. VH1: Nelly? Pink: Nelly the elephant. I felt so bad; I got into a fight with the trainer. ... This poor elephant, it's in this warehouse where it has to keep getting down on its hands and knees. This is a huge elephant, it's so cute, and I could see how painful it was for it to get down on its hands and knees, and I'm like, "Can we not do this anymore? I think we got the take, you know, it's enough. The elephant has had enough." And the trainer's like, "Oh, he loves it." And so I was like, "So when were you an elephant?" ... I didn't like it. I won't do that again. ... No more animals. VH1: You get really personal on [Missundazstood]. Is that hard? I couldn't do that; I couldn't tell people all that stuff. Pink: No, because I don't know how to keep my own secrets. I can keep other people's secrets. ... | LADIES GO LENNY'S WAY! The Province Monday, August 26, 2002 For the 10,000-plus assembled at GM Place on Saturday night, having P!nk opening for Lenny Kravitz was a most excellent bonus. If anyone expected to see the headliner get trounced by the feisty upstart, this wasn't the night. The crowd was there for, and belonged to, Lenny. P!nk just got to borrow them for awhile. As she snapped up three Lenny keychains at $8 each, Anna Shultz, 21, summed up the evening: "I got my tickets for Lenny and then P!nk was announced. I thought 'Hey, that's doubly cool.'" Laura Breingan, echoed Shultz's thoughts: "I'm a Lenny fan and there's no way I would've just come for P!nk. It's just an added bonus for me and everyone else that she's on the bill." Breingan still sang along to almost every one of P!nk's songs during the blond bob-shell's rousing set. Hit radio and music TV embraced P!nk's M!ssundaztood for this very reason. With three hooky singles -- "Get the Party Started," "Don't Let Me Get Me" and "Just Like a Pill" -- and possibly more to come, the album is a programmer and retailers' wet dream. If the image managers continue positioning her right, P!nk's looking at a Lenny-length career. The improvements in her show since a sold out June 19 Orpheum concert were massive enough to generate brisk sales of $50 P!nk shirts at the merch booth. Sporting a hip new nose pierce, Jane Leiske was introduced to P!nk by her niece Savanah. As a trade-off, Jane took her niece to see "her boyfriend" Lenny. The award-winning singing member of Farmer's Daughter was floored by P!nk's performance: "She's mad with talent, that was an over-the-top vocal performance. Unlike so many of today's hit artists, she can really sing. "Of course, I'm waiting here in line to spend $50 on a retarded Lenny tank top, because he's so incredibly wonderful." No word on whether Leiske went for the "Lenny Does It Better" or "Lenny" design but her words were echoed by every other dolled-up female fan -- likely 70 per cent of the house -- The Province talked to. Kravitz's popularity with "da ladies" is so strong, one record rep was overheard saying, "The thing about a Lenny show is the show and then the show." No idea what he meant. "Just that Lenny Kravitz is a rocker with a funky edge," says fan Shari Rogers. "And he's my boyfriend." "So what if he's not on the radio, that's what albums are for," says Courtney Wilson. "We listened to his CD on the way in." Introducing a song from his CD Circus, the 38-year-old Kravitz echoed Wilson's sentiments: "For all of you out there who still listen to albums, this song is a good one that wasn't ever a hit." Not that Kravitz took too many chances in his set. The afro'ed rock god's slick, bombastic set stuck almost entirely to his hits. There are a lot of them, too. From the moving "Stillness of Heart," with the whole crowd singing along, to the ripping "Are You Gonna Go My Way," Lenny delivered. Backed by two guitarists and amazing drummer Cindy Blackman, sporting skintight hot pants and a deep-cleavage tank-top set that would make Foxy Cleopatra blush, Kravitz and crew demonstrated all the moves in the Rock Star 101 handbook. The Grand Funk Railroad-era '70s stadium guitar jams wouldn't quit. Lenny doffed his sunglasses after one of them. People FREAKED! Before the evening was through, the tight four-piece unit drove the capacity crowd to increasingly enthusiastic responses. Kravitz owned them with his spare, journeyman technique. To the rest of the world she is Pink, to those gathered around the Harts she is Alecia and had no problem in taking the back seat role on an occasion so grand and grave. Alecia was in the crowd last year to see Carey fall from the sky and knew exactly what the risks could be. Later that evening as the group were all celebrating in the Lobby of the Marriott I caught Carey and Alecia grappling in the lobby hallway, tangled in Carey's crutches. "Get a room you two" I said to the hot and heavy couple. "We already have a room", said Alecia, "I just can't get Carey back there". We've never dated her and were wondering what that's like. She's supercool. We have the same lifestyle, kind of have the same views. She's a tough chick, comes from Philly, grew up skating— couldn't be a better couple. We were introduced really briefly at the 2001 X-Games, like five minutes before I killed myself. She was like, "All right, he was nice. Won't ever see him again." Then, about a month and a half later, in Vegas, she came up for the U.S. Open [of Freestyle Motocross]. We have a mutual friend and kind of hit it off again there. Basically, we've been going ever since. Be honest: What did you think of her music before you two started dating? Honestly, I'd never heard any of her old stuff, and when we first started dating was when her first single was on MTV, and I like it. | KRAVITZ WOWS CROWD, P!NK IMPRESSES WITH RAW SPIRIT By Ramiro BurrSan Antonio Express-News Web Posted : 08/18/2002 12:00 AM Lenny Kravitz's retro-guitar assault and animated antics rocked the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater Sunday night. But it was R&B/rocker Pink who stole the show in her brief opening set. Kravitz exploded on stage at 9:15 p.m. with "Bank Robber Man," fronting long walls of amplifiers in a scene reminiscent of the early '70s rock concerts. Adding to the nostalgic ambience was the psychedelic lighting and the bandmembers' bell-bottom jeans and tall bushy hairdos. Kravitz's band was tight and played with striking intensity, hammering loud crunchy rhythms that kept the amphitheater floor vibrating. Highlights included the anthemic "Dig In," which got everyone on their feet, screaming along. But 20 minutes into his set, Kravitz and company began a series of long guitar solos that contained boring rock clichés – endless jams, exaggerated head-banging moves and overly dramatic poses. The mid-tempo "If I Could Fall in Love," brought the heat factor to tolerable levels. Kravitz has been accused of being overly influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. At his best, he expertly blends blues, R&B and even soul into his raw guitar mix. But sometimes, like Sunday night, he can lose his edge and simply become repetitive with the longwinded guitar jams. Kravitz hardcore fans of course, pumped their fists on cue. On the other hand, Pink demonstrated she's much more than the sum of her early pop/rap tunes like "There You Go," an early crowd favorite. Pink opened with her biggest hit so far, "Get the Party Started," which did indeed get the head-bopping fans all riled up, thanks to its free-spirit attitude. But then she delved into raw blues/R&B territory, taking on Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart" and "Me & Bobby McGee." Her tortured wails during the songs were impressive. She also tackled the tough but tender 4 Non Blondes' hit "What's Up," a tune she told the crowd "Got me arrested for disturbing the peace…10 years ago. I hope you help me disturb the peace tonight." Pink was at her best when she unloaded her bluesy sound, especially on the harder-edged "Me & Bobby McGee," and "Misery." During the set, Pink appeared perfectly at ease and even took time to sit down and tell jokes between tunes. But she cranked up the excitement factor in the end run, slamming into her latest single "Just Like a Pill," and her anti-Britney Spears tune "Don't Let Me Get Me." | NOTHING TO HIDE P!nk was once asked to take etiquette classes by the CEO of her record label. She refused on the grounds that it was an insult to her mother.Unlike most pop stars, especially on a media promotion day, she even dresses herself, as opposed to using a stylist. Today, she's wearing light green, calf-length plaid pants and a custom-cut black t-shirt. "This I my hobby, making clothes," P!nk says. "This was a regular black t-shirt and you can just attach sh**, cut sh** off and pull it in here, so it bunches out like a sweater kind of." She's added a chain around the neck and proudly wears her father's dog tags from his tour of duty in Vietnam. P!nk did agree just once to take media coaching, but the exasperated instructor walked out after five minutes. "It's so cheesy and everybody does it. You're just a puppet on a string. I'd kill myself if I had to do that. I'd be so miserable. If I couldn't just piss people off and say what I really think? Aggggghhh." The 22-year-old, who also appeared earlier this year in the movie Rollerball as a dominatrix narrator, ("whips, chains, studs, the whole nine," she laughs), is more endearing as her feisty self than any trained puppet. She is forthright, funny and also, paradoxically, vulnerable and strong. "I've left so many interviews in tears. I'm an emotional person. This music is so deep to me and the album (M!ssundaztood) is just vulnerable. It's just confusing to hear myself talk. I write very clearly about how I feel. When I say it, I think it gets all muddled up. I talk too much. I say the wrong things and misrepresent myself." As a kid, P!nk, who was born Alicia Moore in Philadelphia, was an admitted trouble maker, very anti-authority and anti-system. She found true happiness in music, but wasn't encouraged at school by her teachers, she says, so instead of fulfilling the "63 hours of detention" she needed to graduate, she dropped out. She had lent her vocal skills to rap group Scratch N' Smooth (Scratch went on to join The Roots and guests on M!ssundaztood) and was deejaying on a weekly basis at Philly's Club Fever. There, a talent scout recruited her as a backing vocalist for short-lived MCA act Basic Instinct, then another fleeting R&B outfit, Choice, signed to LaFace. The stint in Choice led to her solo deal with LaFace when she was just 16. Her 1998 debut, Can't Take Me Home, went on to sell over three million copies worldwide. In between albums, she achieved her first #1 hit with the remake of "Lady Marmalade," for the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, with Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and Missy Elliott. She quickly followed with hits "Get This Party Started" and "Don't Let Me Get Me" from M!ssundaztood, in which the real P!nk begins to emerge. "I figured that I would just lay it all out on the line and not have to explain it," she says of the lyrics, "but it's exactly the opposite. It's a very vulnerable situation for me to be in." | VERSATILE VOCALIST PROVES CONVINCING IN MANY GENRES Anastasia Pantsios Special to The Plain DealerIn her recent hit "Don't Let Me get Me," Pink sings "I'm tired of being compared to damned Britney Spears, she's so pretty, that just ain't me." Actually, Pink is just as pretty as Britney, though not in such a bland, Barbie-doll way. But the ways in which Britney ain't her are too numerous to list as she amply demonstrated at Tower City Amphitheater last night when she finally played her illness-postponed show of June 5. There was no dramatic entrance; she appeared on the drum platform banging on one of her drummer's tom toms. There were no dancers, no elaborate effects, no costume changes, only an inch or two of skin showing between her baggy, knee-length cargo shorts and her tank top. And, oh yes, she sings live. In fact, 22-year-old Pink demonstrated that she's a strong, flexible vocalist versatile enough to be convincing in pop, hard rock, traditional soul and urban contemporary genres. She kicked off her hourlong show, appropriately, with the spirited dance pop romp "Get the Party Started," and drew heavily from her sophomore album "M!ssundastood," which rocked harder than 2000's "Can't Take Me Home." On tunes like her new single, "Just Like a Pill," her five-piece band (which included two females) helped her drive home the thunderous arena-rock crescendos. While the low-key ballad "Dear Diary" was a little lightweight, another introspective song called "Family Portrait" incorporated more of her soul influences and was deeply moving. Most powerful of all was her set closer, the darkly portentous "My Vietnam," which opened with helicopter and explosion sound effects and closed with the guitarist playing the "Star Spangled Banner." In addition to performing her own tunes, Pink paid tribute to some of her influences, including M!ssundastood's producer Linda Perry. She told the audience she used to sing 4 Non Blondes' 1993 hit "What's Up" on street corners growing up in Pennsylvania and then did a credible version of the tune that echoed some of Perry's distinctive vocal mannerisms without aping them. She tagged Ashford & Simpson's "You're All I Need to Get By" to her own "Respect," a tip of the hat to classic R&B. And she offered the crowd a Janis Joplin medley blending "Piece of My Heart," "Me and Bobby McGee" and a stirring, virtuoso "Summertime." "Wrapping it up now," Mya said last week in Los Angeles. "I haven't been really consistent [with recording]. I've been in and out of the studio, so shoot, I'm using some records I did maybe two years ago. I been in the studio every chance I get for the fun of it, and I realized, 'Hey, I need to start recording an album.' After that I pretty much realized I had 20 songs in my pocket. "It wasn't a forced issue," she added. "We didn't set a time and say we need to shut down everything — no more this, no more that — we're gonna focus on the album. I asked people for tracks, I'd vibe on them, write to them. When they came out as great records and the record company liked them, we polished them. That's what happened. Everything was up in the air, all over the place." While spending close to two years recording at her own pace, Mya had plenty of time between studio sessions to win a Grammy Award and commit homicide. "I'm a part of the cell block girls," Mya said, referring to her big-screen debut in the musical "Chicago." "My character's name is Mona. She's a murderess — she killed her husband. She found out some things about her husband that kind of ticked her off." In real life the 22-year-old is a little peeved that some people still see her as a kid, but she said she's going to show her maturity on her forthcoming LP. "I've grown up and gone through some things, so I'm expressing what I feel," explained Mya, who walked away with a Grammy for her part on "Lady Marmalade." "I'm a little bit more open than usual, and I've lived a life. I've had a career where I can live a comfortable life. I'm not Britney Spears, so I still have a life. I can go certain places without getting hounded by little 5-year-olds. So I'm very sane as a person. I've gone through relationships, gone through the normal things that a normal person would go through." Mya said that despite the edginess of her project, people shouldn't be too shocked by her free-spirited wordplay and music. "It's well balanced," she proclaimed. "I'm not saying, 'F--- you, kiss my ass.' I'm not cursing all over my album, but it's real. I know lots of females that can appreciate where I'm coming from, and men too." Even men who dress up like women. "I have song called 'Whatever Bitch.' It's strictly for the drag queens. I just like to sit and watch [them]. My dancers introduced me to that world a long time ago. I incorporated some of it in my show, the dancing and the voguing. It's art." Missy Elliott may appear on the track, and that isn't the only "Moulin Rouge" reunion Mya has planned for her still-untitled third album. "Lady Marmalade" producer Rockwilder supplied tracks, and Pink lent her pen to the project. "[Pink] wrote a song called 'Take a Picture.' [It's about] just what it says. 'Take a picture so I can remember this moment forever.' It's almost like a graduation or wedding song. You can sing it anywhere. It's a really nice song." Mya also experimented in the studio, recording a ladies' anthem titled "Unless My Period's Late," a Caribbean-flavored duet with Sean Paul called "Things Come and Go" and covering the 1983 Rick James song "Cold Blooded." "I got another song called 'Look So Good,' " Mya said. "That's one of my favorites. It's about a guy that you're with simply because damn, he looks so freakin' good. It's a horrible relationship, it's not healthy for you, and you're asking him, 'Why you gotta look so good? You make it so hard to leave. I don't want anyone else to have you, and you're never gonna treat me right.' So I'm pretty sure a man could relate to that." Mya's scheduled to work with Dr. Dre this month on one of the LP's final cuts. | ICE PALACE CROWD WARMS TO ROCKER KRAVITZ If Lenny Kravitz hadn't become a rock star, he'd have to play one on TV.His look and sound both are amalgams of half the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame's lineup. Live, that translates to bent-knee posturing and even some old-fashioned arena rock excess, as in drummer Cindy Blackman's solo. Backed by Blackman, guitarist Craig Ross and bassist Jack Daley, Kravitz tore through a hit-heavy set Sunday night for an Ice Palace crowd of 9,563. He hit the stage hard with ``Bank Robber Man,'' showering the front rows with fake money. The lumbering ``Beyond the 7th Sky'' was extended with some Led Zeppelinesque jamming. Kravitz played peacemaker after a scuffle in the crowd, backing up his words of peace with a soothing ``Stillness of Heart.'' Harold Todd added some effective saxophone to ``Let Love Rule,'' and ``Believe'' and Kravitz's turgid take on the Guess Who's ``American Woman'' both were crowd favorites. Pink seemed determined to destroy any lingering impressions of herself as a dance-pop diva. The centerpiece of her set was a medley of songs associated with Janis Joplin: ``Summertime,'' ``Me and Bobby McGee'' and ``Piece of My Heart.'' She had the pipes for them, as she verified on her next two numbers, the melodramatic ``My Vietnam'' and the torch-rock of ``Misery.'' Otherwise, Pink seemed subdued, and high-energy tunes such as ``Get the Party Started'' and ``Don't Let Me Get Me'' lost impact as a result. Abandoned Pools opened with a 30-minute set. Singer-guitarist Tommy Walter, who's a one-man band in the studio, was backed by a three- piece group churning out songs from last year's ``Humanistic'' album. Her debut album was an out-of-the-blue double platinum 'smash' within the US gaining platinum and Gold discs around the world, and her second album M!ssundaztood released in November 2001 seems set to follow suit. | WITH GUITARS BLAZING, KRAVITZ TURNS UP THE HEAT By Ken Capobianco, Globe Correspondent, 8/7/2002Lenny Kravitz was born to play amphitheaters - nurses probably held up lighters in his delivery room. This was never more apparent than at the Tweeter Center Monday night, when Kravitz gave a clinic in old-school arena rock during a show rescheduled from last month for health reasons. We're talking five video screens with psychedelic images, huge lighting setups, stacks and stacks of amplifiers, and hot guitars blazing into the August night. And, of course, there was Kravitz in sunglasses, full-blown Afro, and a wardrobe straight out of Superfly's closet, including a black vest with ankle-length frills. Kravitz and his four-piece powerhouse band opened with a bristling ''Bank Robber Man'' as blasts of air hoisted waves of paper over the crowd. It set the mood for what was a decidedly heavier show than Kravitz has given in the past. The emphasis, especially in the first half, was the metallic side of the singer/songwriter's canon, personified by a ripsnorting ''Rock & Roll Is Dead.'' Kravitz was a photographer's dream as he posed with back arched, often in tandem with guitarist deluxe Craig Ross. Somehow, though, the showmanship mostly didn't feel contrived. It was just Kravitz doing what he feels comfortable doing, and that's being a rock star with a capital ''R.'' On a brutally humid night, the singer kept the pace torrid. Longtime drummer Cindy Blackman helped carry the band, blasting through the heart of the rockers, including a funky ''Dig In.'' When the band downshifted with ''Let Love Rule,'' featuring the fine sax work of Harold Todd, Kravitz took a stroll through the audience, milking the familiar gimmick for all it was worth. He followed it with a heartfelt take on ''Stillness of Heart,'' his ode to God and one of the best tracks on his most recent record, ''Lenny.'' But those were the only change-ups in a night of fastballs - straight-up heat capped by a furious version of ''Are You Gonna Go My Way.'' Pink tried to get the party started, but the singer seemed exhausted and lethargic. | HEALHY KRAVITZ DELIVERS DAZZLING SHOW by Linda LabanTuesday, August 6, 2002 Lenny Kravitz, with Pink and Abandoned Pools, at the Tweeter Center, last night. The first words from Lenny Kravitz to his audience during his show at the Tweeter Center last night formed something of an apology for his abrupt cancellation two weeks earlier. ``The only reason I didn't go on that night was because I didn't want to give you a b----- show,'' he announced curtly of his pullout due to illness. Soon he was tearing into the bubblegum rocker ``Dig In'' from his latest CD ``Lenny,'' mixing an easy upbeat rhythm the audience could dance to and a melodic chorus Kravitz could mine for some interaction. It was just what they wanted. Pounded out with panache, ``American Woman'' and ``Are You Gonna Go My Way'' flew on heavy, chunky guitar riffs. The lovely old charmer ``Let Love Rule'' and the delicate ``Stillness of Heart'' contrasted nicely with that, as Kravitz dipped in and out of his 10-plus years of making the sounds of the '70s into new, often lovely anthems like the finale - a big jamming ``Fly Away.'' Pink was also on a retro kick. She mixed songs from both her teen pop/r & b debut and the more rock sounding second CD, ``Missundaztood,'' but the 22-year-old Philly native's set was focused on singing, not reprising appealing hits. Though her lovely confessional, ``My Vietnam,'' mined deep personal emotions, it was in cover songs she and her five-piece backing band excelled. Easing from crooning ``Summertime'' and ``Me and Bobby McGee'' into belting out ``Piece of My Heart,'' Pink paid tribute to Janis Joplin. A magnificently sung ``What's Up,'' by 4 Non Blondes, nodded to current collaborator Linda Perry. Openers Abandoned Pools, fronted by former Eels member Tommy Walter, delivered Smashing Pumpkins influenced guitar pop from its solid debut, ``Humanistic,'' with the swooning pop single, ``The Remedy,'' a lovely moment aired in an almost empty arena. Ultimately, Kravitz's decision to shelve rather than limp through a poor performance was the right one.
