VH1 DRIVEN : P!NK

December 3rd

Driven: Pink the tale of a suburban rebel who breaks all the rules on the way to the top of the charts. In the tradition of Madonna and Kid Rock, Pink was never afraid to challenge expectations, whether she was a suburban kid singing Mary J. Blige in downtown hip-hop clubs or a white girl with pink hair singing R&B on MTV. She never used the boundaries of what's acceptable as her guide, proving to her family, her label and her fans that she will only be understood on her own terms.

Driven: Pink highlights include:

Although a healthy baby at birth, Alecia Moore, aka Pink, quickly develops asthma that plagues her through her early years.

Despite her asthma, Alecia has an active childhood playing soccer, taking gymnastics and singing, particularly with her father, a Vietnam Vet who plays the guitar and sings with his daughter.

When her parents decide to divorce, Alecia's world is shaken and she takes refuge in her growing abilities in and connection to music.

Alecia gets a taste of being in a band when she joins a high school punk band called Middle Ground.

Confined by the claustrophobia of the suburbs, Alecia seeks escape and stimulation in Philadelphia, where she sings in the predominantly black world of the city's hip-hop clubs.

Based on her growing reputation on the stages of Philadelphia's clubs, Alecia is asked to join a trio of white girls singing R&B music called Choice.

At just 16, Alecia and her bandmates get a record deal with LaFace Records.

Choice relocates to Atlanta, where the girls record an album and are asked to showcase their talent at the label's annual Christmas gala.

Following a disastrous performance, Alecia is faced with a choice: Leave Choice and go solo, or go home and start over without a record contract.

Alecia decides to go it alone, takes the stage name Pink and dyes her hair fuchsia.

Pink's first album Can't Take Me Home goes double platinum and her edgy videos on MTV make her a star.

Pink joins an ensemble of divas to record a remake of the Patti LaBelle classic "Lady Marmalade" for the Moulin Rouge soundtrack.

Pink fights her label to bring a new style and image to her second album, collaborating with her long-time idol Linda Perry of 4 Non Blondes fame.

Busting out with her second album M!ssundaztood, Pink stuns her fans and critics with her soul-baring ballads and grooving dance rhythms.

Some of the interview highlights include:

Judith Moore, mother: "It's scary when your child's gasping for breath, and you're running into the emergency room for adrenaline shots."

Elizabeth Coughlin, stepsister: "I truly don't remember her ever taking shit from anybody."

Judith Moore, mother: "Her initial writings were always very introspective. Some of it was very black, and very deep, almost worrisome. But, it was her outlet, and her way of I guess, venting these feelings that she had."

Jason Moore, brother: "There was probably at least a half dozen times within a year or two there where she got in trouble, had to go to court for something."

Julie Swartz, friend: "She would go out to clubs, you know until five or six o'clock in the morning and she wasn't gonna listen to anybody telling her that she couldn't."

Jim Moore, father: "She signed the record contract when she was sixteen, and it was like 'Wow, look at this. Wow, look what you did, you got a record deal.'"

Sharon Daley, A&R LaFace Records: "It wasn't about Choice anymore from that point, I think it was all about Alecia Moore.
